Bellini sets sail for the Barcolana International Regatta

Trieste Bay may truly be said to have ‘launched a thousand ships’. Sailboats, in fact; and actually one thousand nine hundred and sixty-eight – the record number to date for the Barcolana Autumn Cup, from all over the world.

One of this year’s 2,000-odd sailboats is a true winner, a 70-foot Maxi sponsored by Canella Bellini, Pendragon, which came in third last year and whose Lorenzo Bodini and Giorgio Pitter previously won numerous prestigious offshore races. This time around, Lorenzo (who took part in the Sydney 2000 Olympics on the cat-ketch sailboat Tornado) and Giorgio will be flanked by the former’s brother, Marco Bodini.

Trieste’s famous regatta (start date for the main race is Sunday, October 2, though a series of sideshow events are scheduled from Sept. 30 to Oct. 9) is one of four races that will close the season for Pendragon: the crew will also take part in the Bernetti Cup, traditional practice race, also held in the Gulf of Trieste, as well as Veleziana and the Venice Hospitality Challenge.

“Fair winds and following seas”, then, to our seafaring friends and all friends of the breeziest, peachiest wine cocktail around: Canella Bellini.

Mantua celebrates culture with crumble cakes, Bellini and fun

September 7-11 is the 20th, glorious edition of Festivaletteratura in Mantua – Italy’s Capital of Culture for 2016. If literature and culture sounds stuffy to you, come over and see for yourself the fun, events and spectacular turnout (some 120,000 participants each year) and international authors – this year, the list includes Simonetta Agnello Hornby, Jami Attenberg, Julian Barnes, Alan Bradley, Roberto Calasso, Jonathan Coe, Hossein Derakhshan, Louise Doughty, Matthew Fox, Go Dugong, Wlodek Goldkorn, Howard Jacobson, Dany Laferrière, David Mitchell, Cees Nooteboom, Edna O’Brien, Daniel Pennac, Dorit Rabinyan, Charlotte Rampling, Jonathan Safran Foer, Fredrik Sjöberg, Oliviero Toscani, Sarah Waters, Jeanette Winterson…!

See – and taste for yourself, as the famous literary festival will showcase, as always, the best of Mantuan delights, including the city’s traditional Sbrisolona crumble cake, as scrumptiously made by Mantuan patisserie-maker San Martino.

San Martino has been a keen supporter of the festival from day one, and in celebration of its 20th anniversary, is featuring Spazio Sbrisolona in Piazza Sordello, where visitors can savor the crumble cake, paired with a cool Bellini cocktail of Prosecco sparkle and fresh, yummy peach.

“Summertime” Muccino premieres with Bellini

Gabriele Muccino put together a sparkling, gorgeous cast for his tenth, much awaited film, which premieres at the Venice International Festival of Aug. 31-Sept. 10: Brando Pacitto (Marco), Matilda Lutz (Maria), Joseph Haro (Paul), Taylor Frey (Matt) and… Canella Bellini.

A coming of age story, a love story, a coming-out drama in flashback; a journey from Rome to San Francisco and from kneejerk homophobia to acceptance of each other (Marco and Maria don’t get along at all at first; then of course they do) and of the American gay couple – Matt and Paul – whose home they are staying at for a week.

A week that will change the course of their lives, and a heart-warming film to Jovanotti’s engaging soundtrack, to be released in movie theatres September 15.
